Ecuador advances energy transition through renewables and international cooperation

Ecuador is advancing its energy transition through increased investment in renewable resources and technical research. During the 2026 International Congress of Energy Innovation in Quito, officials highlighted the country's untapped potential in wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass energy to complement its existing hydroelectric base.

The Instituto de Investigación Geológico y Energético (IIGE) has also conducted technical sessions focused on the integration of green hydrogen and biohydrogen into the national energy system. These sessions involved international experts discussing electrolysis technologies and market applications to enhance energy resilience.

Strengthening bilateral ties, the Cámara Oficial Española de Comercio e Industria de Quito (Camespa) is working to mobilize European capital for clean energy infrastructure in Ecuador. This cooperation follows a roadmap established in Madrid to facilitate sustainable investment. Additionally, the Galápagos Islands are being utilized as a showcase for decarbonization projects aimed at reducing fossil fuel dependency.
