Ecuador advances regional aviation and Antarctic research initiatives

Aviation and scientific initiatives in Ecuador are advancing through new regional connectivity and international research efforts.

Authorities from Ecuador and Peru are preparing a technical evaluation in September 2026 to determine the viability of a direct flight route between Cuenca and Chiclayo. This project is supported by an open skies agreement ratified by Peru's Ministry of Transport and Communications, aimed at boosting regional tourism. Officials plan to review airport infrastructure and engage with airlines such as LATAM and Avianca to discuss operational feasibility.

Simultaneously, the XXIX Ecuadorian Antarctic Expedition (2025-2026) is conducting research on climate change, biodiversity, and ocean dynamics. Operating from the Pedro Vicente Maldonado Scientific Station on Greenwich Island, the mission includes scientists and military personnel from the Ecuadorian Navy. Logistics for the expedition involve air transport via Punta Arenas, Chile, to maintain Ecuador's status as a Consultative Member of the Antarctic Treaty.
