Colombia and Chile declare emergencies following earthquake and floods

Colombia and Chile are both responding to major natural disasters. In Colombia, President Abelardo de la Espriella has declared an economic, social, and ecological emergency across 15 departments following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake. The disaster has resulted in at least 314 deaths, over 4,400 injuries, and 262 people missing. Material damage is extensive, with over 30,000 homes destroyed and 136,000 damaged. Ecuador has provided 12 tons of humanitarian aid to assist the affected regions.

In northern Chile, President José Antonio Kast has declared a state of catastrophe for the province of Tocopilla due to extreme rainfall and mudslides. The region experienced approximately 30 millimeters of rain in a few hours, an exceptional amount for the arid area. The flooding has caused at least one death and affected approximately 2,000 people. In Tocopilla, an estimated 60% of homes were inundated by mud. Authorities have issued Red Alerts and ordered evacuations in several sectors to mitigate the risk of further landslides and flash floods.
