Ecuador denies accreditation for Colombian consular official

Ecuador's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility has denied the accreditation of Elvira de las Mercedes Sanabria Salazar as the First Secretary of the Colombian Consulate in Nueva Loja. Consequently, the Ecuadorian government has canceled the diplomatic visas previously granted to Sanabria Salazar and her husband, Vladimir Fernando Ramírez Sierra.

The decision, communicated to the Colombian Embassy in Ecuador, cites non-compliance with the procedures established by the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations regarding the appointment and admission of consular personnel.

Sanabria Salazar had been appointed by the government of Gustavo Petro to serve in a provisional capacity. The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry indicated that the Colombian Embassy may resubmit a corrected accreditation request under the appropriate category and functions to continue the process.
