Ecuador dialysis clinics face crisis over state debts

Private dialysis clinics in Ecuador are facing a critical operational crisis due to significant unpaid debts from the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) and the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS). Reports indicate that the MSP has failed to make payments for up to 26 months, while the IESS owes 12 months of payments, contributing to a total estimated debt of $10.7 million.

The financial strain has impacted medical providers, suppliers, and staff, with some clinics reporting they can no longer sustain operations. In the Los Ríos province, approximately 280 patients are currently waiting for available slots to receive dialysis treatment. The lack of funds has also led to suppliers demanding cash payments and workers facing months of unpaid wages.
