Ecuador sentences Abdalá Bucaram to prison in COVID-19 test case

An Ecuadorian court has sentenced former president Abdalá Bucaram and his son, Jacobo Bucaram, to nine years and four months in prison. They were convicted as collaborators in an organized crime ring involving the irregular commercialization of approximately 21,000 COVID-19 rapid tests and other medical supplies during the 2020 pandemic.

In the same ruling, former transit agent Leandro Berrones was sentenced to 13 years and four months as a direct perpetrator. Israeli citizen Sheinman Oren received a reduced sentence of two years and eight months due to his effective cooperation with authorities.

Abdalá Bucaram, 74, attended the hearing via video link from a medical facility in Guayaquil, where he is being treated for cardiac issues. He has rejected the ruling, calling it 'ridiculous' and asserting that the transaction was a private matter between individuals. Bucaram announced plans to appeal the decision and intends to take the case to international bodies, including the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
