Ecuador education officials defend competency-based learning pilot
Ecuadorian education authorities are defending a new competency-based curriculum pilot following criticism regarding repetitive content in school materials. Leonardo Andrade, acting coordinator for Zone 6 of the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Culture, stated that the learning sheets used for fifth, sixth, and seventh grades are not strict textbooks but rather support resources.
Andrade explained that while topics may overlap across these grades, the pedagogical difference lies in the scope and depth applied by teachers to meet specific competency goals. He emphasized that the new model shifts away from memorization toward practical application and reasoning.
However, the National Union of Educators has challenged these claims, arguing that the pilot does not justify a lack of pedagogical progression. The union contends that educational materials must increase in complexity to match the developmental stages of students and raised concerns regarding the technical rigor and legal obligations of the state to provide high-quality, updated resources.
