Ecuador expands banana exports to the Middle East
Ecuador, the world’s leading banana exporter, has seen the Middle East emerge as its third-largest export market. According to trade figures through August 2026, the region accounts for 14% of Ecuadorian banana shipments, surpassing the United States at 10%. The Middle East market represents 14.31 million boxes, a 3.55% increase from 2025.
Total Ecuadorian banana exports reached 282 million boxes valued at $3 billion, marking a 9% increase compared to the same period last year. José Antonio Hidalgo, Executive Director of the Association of Ecuadorian Banana Exporters (AEBE), stated that the sector aims to continue gaining ground by meeting all international regulatory standards.
Growth is supported by a free trade agreement with the United Arab Emirates, providing duty-free access to the Persian Gulf. Turkey and Saudi Arabia are currently the largest regional buyers, with Turkey receiving 5.5 million boxes and Saudi Arabia receiving 5.52 million boxes through August.
