Ecuador expands digital connectivity and addresses social impacts

The Ecuadorian government is pursuing new alliances with private technology companies and internet service providers to expand connectivity in rural and border regions. During the Future by ALTALA event, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Technology emphasized the importance of public-private cooperation to strengthen telecommunications infrastructure and reduce digital gaps.

Simultaneously, rising connectivity in Ecuador presents social challenges. Data from the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) indicates that as of July 2025, 80.1% of the population aged five and older used the internet, with 59.3% owning a smartphone. Experts warn of the phenomenon of ‘phubbing’—the habit of ignoring those present in favor of a mobile device—which can deteriorate intimacy and increase conflict in interpersonal relationships.
