Ecuador experiences fatal bridge shooting and foiled attack on assembly member

A gun attack on the La Floresta bridge in the cantón of Yantzaza, Zamora Chinchipe, left 21‑year‑old Stalin Jhoel Hidalgo Wachapá dead and injured a 15‑year‑old teenager, who was taken to the local hospital in stable condition. Authorities recovered three shell casings, have opened an investigation and have not yet identified any suspects.

In the city of Puyo, Pastaza, assemblyman José Nango reported a suspected attack when a gun jammed as an assailant tried to fire at him. The incident occurred at a local venue after a football celebration. Police provided Nango with protection and are reviewing security‑camera footage to determine motives, which may be linked to his political work.
