Latin American activists protest for abortion rights on Global Day of Action

Across Latin America, feminist organizations and activists held demonstrations on September 28 to mark the Global Day of Action for Legal, Safe, and Free Abortion.

In Colombia, hundreds of women marched in Bogotá to defend the right to abortion up to 24 weeks, expressing concern over potential legal rollbacks under the government of Abelardo de la Espriella. Despite the 2022 Constitutional Court ruling, activists noted persistent administrative and social barriers to access.

In Mexico, protests occurred in Mexico City and Querétaro. While many states have decriminalized the procedure, seven entities still maintain criminalization despite Supreme Court rulings. Activists highlighted the need for unified action against rising conservative political movements.

In Argentina, demonstrations focused on protecting sexual health services and abortion funding. Activists criticized recent budget cuts under the administration of Javier Milei, which they claim have hindered the implementation of Law 27.610.

In Chile, organizations called on Congress to secure funding for reproductive health in the 2027 budget. Meanwhile, in Ecuador, activists in Quito marched for full decriminalization, noting that current laws can lead to imprisonment and that many procedures remain clandestine.
