Ecuador faces digital maturity challenges in education and business

Ecuador is experiencing a digital transformation across both the educational and business sectors, though significant gaps in digital maturity remain. In education, technological trends are being used to enhance learning experiences and institutional management. According to the 2023 National Educational Technology Research, 45% of schools in the country have access to modern technological tools, including interactive projectors and digitization tools for academic documents.

In the business sector, the challenge lies in moving beyond basic internet connectivity to strategic digital integration. Data from the Pyme Digital program, supported by the Inter-American Development Bank and ESPOL, indicates that 68% of Ecuadorian companies are at the lowest levels of digital maturity, categorized as ‘Initial’ or ‘Novice’.

While 84% of Ecuadorians use the internet regularly, only 13% of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) engage in online sales. Furthermore, only 28% of these businesses have their own website, and 22% maintain a social media presence. Experts suggest that for businesses to scale, they must integrate connectivity with cloud services, automation, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.
