Ecuador faces economic challenges in payment security and investment attraction
Ecuador faces a dual challenge regarding its economic landscape, involving both payment preferences and the necessity of attracting investment. Despite the rise of digital alternatives, cash remains a significant preference for many citizens due to its simplicity and the direct control it offers over spending.
Data from the Central Bank of Ecuador shows that by the end of 2025, electronic payment methods represented 97% of authorized services, while physical media—including banknotes, coins, and checks—accounted for 3%. Within digital transactions, electronic transfers led with 62.9%, followed by debit cards at 18.4% and credit cards at 14.4%. Experts note that the coexistence of these methods allows individuals to choose based on specific needs, though security concerns remain a priority for physical money handling.
Simultaneously, the country seeks to improve its attractiveness to investors. Economic growth and job creation are tied to building institutional trust and addressing critical factors such as security, tax stability, clear regulations, and infrastructure. Improving security is viewed as an economic necessity, as instability increases costs and disrupts logistics, while legal certainty and predictable tax systems are essential for long-term business planning.
