Ecuador faces widespread labor precariousness and urgent upskilling needs

A recent analysis of Ecuador's labor market found that 75% of the economically active population works under precarious conditions, with 56% earning below the minimum wage and 86% unable to afford a basic food basket. Experts highlighted political influences on official statistics and the blending of informal and formal employment.

The World Economic Forum warns that 39% of current job competencies will change by 2030, creating 170 million new jobs while displacing 92 million. Companies plan to train 85% of their workforce, and continuous upskilling is seen as essential. To support this, the International Youth Organization for Ibero‑America, together with the International University of Valencia, launched a scholarship programme offering up to 150 grants for Ecuadorian professionals to pursue advanced studies in 2026‑2027.
