Ecuador Football Federation files FIFA complaint over Mexico World Cup match

The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) submitted a formal complaint to FIFA seeking a detailed investigation of incidents that occurred before and during its round‑of‑16 match against Mexico at the 2026 World Cup, which ended in a 2‑0 loss. The federation cited security concerns including a three‑hour travel delay, a crowd and fireworks outside the team hotel, and the throwing of liquids and objects at Ecuadorian journalists and supporters during the game. The FEF also noted alleged threats made to up to five players by armed groups prior to the match.

In the same statement, the FEF announced it has begun the search for a new national team coach and will hold meetings with clubs and associations to transparently account for the federation’s financial management of the tournament. FIFA has acknowledged receipt of the complaint and is monitoring the situation.

The controversy has also been referenced in reports about upcoming matches, with Ecuador warning authorities to enhance security for future fixtures.
