Ecuador football federation launches coach search after World Cup exit

Francisco Egas, president of the Federación Ecuatoriana de Fútbol (FEF), said there was no evidence of threats against the Ecuador national team before its 2‑0 loss to Mexico in the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He dismissed rumors of external pressure and noted that the federation has filed a formal complaint with FIFA to investigate any incidents that might have affected player safety.

Egas also stated that the tournament "was not a failure for Ecuador" and highlighted the team’s progress since 2019, while acknowledging shortcomings in handling pressure during decisive moments. In a separate interview he recalled past cultural problems, saying "those references of the selection used to transport tequila" and vowed to change the internal culture.

Following the elimination, the FEF confirmed that it is actively searching for a new head coach. Egas said the federation aims to appoint a manager before the September FIFA windows so the new coach can prepare the squad for upcoming qualifiers and the Copa América. Candidates such as Guillermo Almada, Ricardo Gareca, Marcelo Gallardo and others have been discussed, but Egas indicated no negotiations are currently underway and emphasized that the ideal coach must "inspire the players and create enthusiasm". The search will conclude before the last two FIFA dates of 2026.
