Ecuador footballers claim threats before World Cup match in Mexico

Argentine journalist Eduardo Feinmann alleged that five Ecuador national‑team players received threats from a suspected Mexican cartel ahead of their World Cup group‑stage match against Mexico, claiming the messages contained personal details about the players and their families. He offered no evidence and no official confirmation was given by the Ecuadorian squad.

In a separate TikTok live stream, the brother of Ecuador winger Gonzalo Plata asserted that the threats were real, repeatedly confirming “1” when asked if they occurred. The Ecuadorian Football Federation issued a statement asking FIFA to investigate any intimidation surrounding the match. FIFA has not yet commented, and no player or staff member has formally reported the alleged threats. Mexico defeated Ecuador 2‑0, eliminating the South American team from the tournament.
