Ecuador human rights lawyers face increasing risks and harassment

Human rights organizations have expressed deep concern regarding the increasing risks faced by lawyers defending human rights defenders, indigenous communities, and social organizations in Ecuador. Reports indicate a pattern of criminalization, stigmatization, and harassment aimed at undermining the rule of law. Tactics include surveillance, smear campaigns, and the use of strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP) to intimidate those defending communities against extractive projects.

There is specific concern regarding the implementation of the Organic Law of Social Transparency and its regulations. While intended for accountability, critics argue that certain provisions grant broad supervisory powers that could be used discretionarily to pressure, sanction, or suspend civil society organizations.
