Luisa González ordered into pretrial detention in Ecuador

Ecuadorian authorities have ordered pretrial detention for former presidential candidate Luisa González as part of the ‘Labyrinth Case’ investigation. The case focuses on alleged money laundering related to the 2023 presidential campaign of the Citizens’ Revolution movement. Prosecutors allege that approximately $500,000 in undeclared funds, potentially linked to illegal hydrocarbon commercialization, were used for electoral advertising.

Following her arrest in Manabí on October 22, 2026, González was transferred from Guayaquil to the Riobamba prison via Latacunga under heavy military and police escort. In addition to González, Judge Henry Navarrete ordered pretrial detention for Santiago Díaz and Wendy Onofre. Another individual, Estefanía Molina, received alternative measures including an electronic bracelet, a travel ban, and a requirement to report to authorities periodically.

González and her supporters have characterized the legal proceedings as political persecution by the administration of President Daniel Noboa. Meanwhile, political organizations in Loja and international groups like the International Democratic Federation of Women have called for her immediate release, citing concerns over democratic guarantees and the rights of her family.
