Ecuador internship rights and benefits for 2026

Under the Internship Law in the Business Sector in Ecuador, students participating in internships at public or private companies are entitled to several legal protections and benefits for 2026.

Key benefits include a mandatory monthly stipend of at least one-third of the Unified Basic Salary (SBU). Based on a 2026 SBU of USD 482, this amount is approximately USD 160.67. Additionally, companies must provide mandatory affiliation with the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS) from the first day. This affiliation, which is fully covered by the employer, provides medical coverage for illness and maternity, as well as protection against occupational risks.

To ensure internships remain compatible with academic obligations, the law limits the working day to between four and six hours daily, not exceeding 30 hours per week. Internships are intended to provide practical experience and skill development for a maximum duration of six months at a single company. After this period, the relationship must transition into a formal employment contract.
