Ecuador keeps 100% tariffs on Colombia, set to ease to 75% on June 1

The deadline for Ecuador and Colombia to withdraw reciprocal tariffs, set by the Andean Community, expired on 21 May 2026. Ecuador, led by President Daniel Noboa, maintained a 100 percent duty on Colombian goods and announced a planned reduction to 75 percent on 1 June, a move aimed at pressuring Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

The Andean Community (CAN) received Ecuador’s reconsideration requests and will process them according to its procedures. Colombian officials have expressed willingness to lift their own 35‑75 percent tariffs on Ecuadorian products if Ecuador follows suit.

Border merchants warn that the continued restrictions could cause losses exceeding $400 million, spur store closures and job cuts in the collegial trade zone, highlighting the broader economic stakes of the dispute.
