Ecuador leads shrimp exports to the United States
Ecuador has emerged as the leading shrimp supplier to the United States. Between January and July 2026, Ecuadorian shrimp shipments reached 171,946 metric tons, marking a 31% increase compared to 2025. This growth occurred despite a 4% decline in total U.S. shrimp imports, indicating that Ecuador is gaining market share from competitors such as India, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand.
In addition to export growth, Ecuador's economy is supported by significant remittance inflows. During the second quarter of 2026, the country received USD 2,041.3 million in remittances, a 9.9% increase from the first quarter of the year. The United States remains the primary source of these funds, accounting for 78.5% of the total (USD 1,602.9 million), followed by Spain with 13.7% (USD 278.8 million).
