Ecuador marks Independence Day by highlighting ten historic sports triumphs

Ecuador will observe its Primer Grito de Independencia on August 10, a national holiday celebrating freedom and pride. The occasion is being used to recall the country’s most celebrated sporting moments.

Key achievements include Alberto Spencer’s record as the top scorer in the Copa Libertadores, leading Peñarol to titles in 1960, 1961 and 1966. In 1990, tennis star Andrés Gómez won the French Open, defeating Andre Agassi. Race‑walker Jefferson Pérez earned Ecuador’s first Olympic gold at the 1996 Atlanta Games. The national football team qualified for its first World Cup in 2002 and advanced to the knockout stage in 2006. Club LDU Quito captured the Copa Libertadores in 2008, becoming the only Ecuadorian side to do so. These milestones are presented as symbols of national dignity and unity.
