Ecuador Mayor René Castillo Detained Over Alleged Embezzlement of Festival Funds

Mayor René Castillo of El Tambo, Ecuador, was arrested on 4 August 2026 during an operation by the Fiscalía General del Estado. Authorities allege he misappropriated public money used to finance the 2024 canton festivals in Cañar province. The investigation, prompted by a citizen complaint, also led to the detention of councilor Edison Espinoza and event promoter Gabriel Ortiz. Interior Minister John Reimberg said the case involves a diversion of funds intended for the celebrations marking the municipality’s 33rd anniversary of cantonization. The mayor, who was elected in the 2023 local elections, faces charges of embezzlement ahead of the upcoming municipal elections scheduled for 29 November 2026.
