Ecuador National Assembly sees increased female representation

The female presence in Ecuador's National Assembly has increased following the resignations of 14 legislators who intend to run in the November 2026 sectional elections. As of August 17, the parliamentary composition shifted from 67 women and 84 men to 70 women and 81 men after alternates were promoted to primary positions. Women now represent 46.3% of the 151 seats.

Of the 14 new assembly members, eight are women. These new female legislators represent the Acción Democrática Nacional (ADN), Revolución Ciudadana (RC), and the Partido Social Cristiano (PSC) parties. Despite this increase, the Assembly has not yet achieved full gender parity, as men still hold 53.7% of the seats.

The rise in female representation is also evident in permanent specialized commissions. Women now preside over 11 of the 15 existing commissions, including those focused on Justice and State Structure, the Right to Health, Economic Development, Sovereignty and Integral Security, and Education.
