Ecuador National Police celebrate 14th anniversary of Order Maintenance Unit
The National Police of Ecuador celebrated the 14th anniversary of the creation of the Order Maintenance Unit (UMO). During ceremonies held in locations such as the Loja Subzone, authorities highlighted the unit's role in maintaining public order, managing mass gatherings, and responding to penitentiary crises.
General Pablo Dávila Maldonado, Commander General of the National Police, noted that the UMO consists of 1,460 officers distributed across nine zones of the country. He emphasized that the unit's mission requires professional judgment, emotional control, and the ability to use negotiation and mediation, stating that the legitimate use of force must only be exercised responsibly and in accordance with the law.
Interior Minister John Reimberg reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting tactical units by strengthening their logistical capabilities and equipment. The unit's history includes various evolutions from mid-20th-century crowd control efforts to its official establishment as the UMO on September 28, 2012, utilizing foot, motorized, mounted, and canine tactics.
