Japan and Ecuador to face off in Kirin Cup semifinals

Japan and Ecuador are set to face each other in a Kirin Cup 2026 semifinal match at Nissan Stadium in Yokohama. The match serves as a key test for both national teams as they prepare for upcoming international competitions.

Japan, led by manager Hajime Moriyasu, enters the match following consecutive victories against Uruguay and Venezuela. Moriyasu has indicated he will rotate his squad, making ten changes to the starting lineup from the previous match. Key players such as Takefusa Kubo and Ayase Ueda are expected to feature.

Ecuador, under the leadership of new manager Marcelo Gallardo, is looking to bounce back from a 3-0 defeat against South Korea. Gallardo has emphasized the need for the team to find new offensive solutions following the international retirement of Enner Valencia. The Ecuadorian squad is currently adapting to the time difference in Japan.

The winner of the Japan-Ecuador match will advance to the Kirin Cup final on October 5, where they will face either New Zealand or Panama, the latter of which lost to New Zealand in a penalty shootout.
