Ecuador partners with UAE to deploy AI for border security

Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa has announced a strategic alliance with the United Arab Emirates to implement the EDGE artificial intelligence system for border surveillance. The technology will be deployed along the borders with Colombia and Peru to detect illicit activities, suspicious movements, and organized crime related to drug trafficking.

Noboa stated that the advanced AI technology is more efficient than maintaining large numbers of soldiers on the ground. While the president highlighted the capabilities of the Emirati-developed system, specific details regarding the total cost, technical specifications, and the exact implementation timeline have not yet been disclosed.

The move comes as Ecuador faces significant costs in its fight against organized crime, which Noboa estimated at 1.5 billion dollars annually. The president emphasized a preference for strategic alliances and cooperation over direct aid to address national security challenges.
