Ecuador police rescue child trafficked for marriage and dismantle exploitation ring

Ecuadorian authorities have conducted major operations targeting human trafficking and exploitation. In the Amazonian province of Pastaza, police rescued a 10-year-old Peruvian girl who had been illegally transported across the border for the purpose of servile marriage. A 50-year-old man was arrested in connection with the trafficking.

In the coastal province of Manabí, the National Police dismantled a criminal structure allegedly linked to the ‘Los Choneros’ gang. The operation, named ‘Fénix 0433’, involved five raids in El Carmen and Bahía de Caráquez. The investigation began after the rescue of a 16-year-old missing adolescent who was being subjected to sexual exploitation. Four suspects were detained during the operation.

Unicef has noted that the region remains highly vulnerable, stating that one in four girls in Latin America and the Caribbean is subjected to early marriage.
