Ecuador prison riots leave eight dead and ten injured

Eight inmates died and ten others were injured during separate prison riots in Ecuador, according to the National Service for the Comprehensive Care of Deprived of Liberty (SNAI). The fatalities occurred at two facilities: four deaths were reported at Cotopaxi No. 1 prison in Latacunga, and four others occurred at the Pichincha No. 1 detention center, also known as El Inca, in Quito.

In the El Inca facility, reports indicate the violence involved gunfire and stabbings. Authorities have apprehended two inmates, Aníbal José Azuaje Briseño and José Daniel Guerrero Flores, along with a prison guard, in connection with the incident. The suspects are slated for transfer to the El Encuentro maximum-security prison in the Santa Elena province.

The unrest follows the recent launch of a national prisoner classification plan aimed at weakening criminal organizations by redistributing 9,214 inmates across six different prisons. Interior Minister John Reimberg suggested a potential link between the riots and the arrest of former presidential candidate Luisa González, though no evidence was provided. Security forces, including police and military units, remain deployed at the affected sites to maintain order.
