Latin American nations advance laws to combat digital violence

Several Latin American nations are advancing legislative measures to combat digital violence and protect minors in online environments.

In Ecuador, the government has proposed a law to prevent and sanction digital violence against women. Developed with support from ONU Mujeres, the project targets online harassment, identity theft, and the non-consensual distribution of intimate content, including material manipulated by artificial intelligence.

In Mexico, legislative efforts are focused on protecting children and adolescents. Senator Luis Donaldo Colosio Riojas has approved an annual work plan for the Digital Rights Commission to address cybersecurity and social media safety. Additionally, Deputy Socorro Jasso Nieto is pushing for constitutional reforms to ensure digital protection against cyberbullying and misinformation.

In Argentina, the province of Río Negro is considering the ‘Ley Ema’, a project aimed at creating a provincial program to prevent and address digital violence in schools. The initiative seeks to establish mandatory training for educators and protocols to handle digital extortion and non-consensual image sharing.

In Colombia, Senator Ferney Silva Idrobo has reintroduced a bill to regulate influencers and content creators, requiring transparency for paid advertising and protecting the image of third parties.
