Ecuador reports 27.7% drop in intentional homicides in May 2026
The Ministry of the Interior said that intentional homicides in Ecuador fell 27.7% in May 2026, decreasing from 935 cases in May 2025 to 676. The figure will be official on 20 June via the Open Data platform.
Police carried out 264,882 operational interventions nationwide from January to May 2026. Theft offences also declined sharply: robberies of persons and motorcycles each fell 43%, vehicle and parts theft fell 54%, home burglaries dropped 35%, and theft from businesses fell 46%. Road‑axis robberies fell 56%.
Arrests rose to 8,217 people, 1,986 more than a year earlier. Seizures of firearms increased to 1,172 units and ammunition to 19,264 rounds. The number of captured high‑value criminal targets rose from one to two, while intermediate‑value targets grew from 10 to 100.
