Ecuador Resumes Rice Exports to Colombia via Rumichaca Border

Ecuador's Ministry of Production, Commerce, Foreign Trade and Investments has finalized a deal to ship 30,000 metric tons of rice to Colombia. The first shipments were slated to start the day after the announcement, with import permits currently being processed for the Rumichaca crossing in the Nariño department.

The export is presented as a positive sign for the recovery of Ecuadorian rice sales to the Colombian market. Oscar Obando, president of the Border Workers Union, highlighted the importance of the corridor, noting that roughly 60,000 tons of rice move through Rumichapa each year and that about 2,000 tractor‑trailers transport the product annually. The union is assessing the impact of the new imports on local logistics and transport conditions.
