Ecuador security analyst warns cyclists of heightened robbery risk

Security analyst Wilson Goyes cautioned cyclists in Ecuador about increased robbery danger on peripheral roads, poorly lit streets and low‑traffic zones. He highlighted specific high‑risk corridors such as Avenida Simón Bolívar, the Ruta Viva, and various rural routes in the coastal and highland regions, noting that thieves often target mid‑range and high‑end bicycles as well as accompanying devices like smartphones and smartwatches.

Goyes advised riders to avoid traveling alone, especially before sunrise, after dark or during early‑morning weekend hours, and to refrain from using headphones that reduce ambient awareness. He recommended planning routes that favor well‑lit bike lanes, busy streets, areas with police presence, and using real‑time location sharing with a trusted contact. Additional precautions include wearing helmets, lights and reflective gear, and securing valuables out of sight.

Cyclist Darwin Torres affirmed the guidance, suggesting longer routes that incorporate dedicated bike paths and better visibility, and emphasizing the importance of avoiding the display of phones, wallets or jewelry while riding.
