Ecuador strengthens electrical grid ahead of dry season

Ecuador is implementing several measures to strengthen its national electrical system ahead of the upcoming dry season (estiaje). The state-owned Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP) has reincorporated 65 MW of thermal generation into the grid following the successful repair of the 6FA-2 unit at the Machala I plant. This unit underwent specialized repairs in Houston, United States, to address turbine rotor issues.

Simultaneously, CELEC EP has begun major maintenance on Generation Unit 2 of the Molino Hydroelectric Plant in Azuay. This is the first large-scale intervention for this unit in 20 years and involves dismantling components to replace worn elements, such as stator temperature sensors and heat exchangers. The Molino complex is the second-largest hydroelectric facility in the country.

In Quito, some industries and shopping centers have begun voluntarily operating their own power generators. This move comes three months before self-generation becomes mandatory for large consumers, as businesses seek to mitigate potential supply risks during the dry season.
