Venezuela to add 1,300 MW to national power grid by late 2026

The Venezuelan government has announced a plan to incorporate 1,300 megawatts (MW) into the National Electric System (SEN) during the final quarter of 2026. This initiative aims to stabilize the power supply and mitigate frequent blackouts, which have recently lasted up to 16 hours in some regions, sparking public protests.

The plan includes the reactivation of Unit 6 at Planta Centro in Carabobo state, which is expected to contribute 600 MW to the central and west-central regions. Additionally, seven units in Zulia state are slated to provide over 500 MW to alleviate the severe crisis in that area. Other smaller units will be integrated nationwide to reach the 1,300 MW target.

Authorities, including Minister of Electric Energy Rolando Alcalá and Corpoelec President Juan Fernández, attributed the current system strain to rising temperatures, increased economic activity, and infrastructure damage caused by earthquakes in June 2026. They also noted that the country now has better access to original spare parts compared to previous years. Transmission improvements are also underway, including the installation of a new autotransformer at the Planta Centro substation to improve energy distribution to the Andean region.
