Ecuador transport unions push fare hike, warn of strike; transit agency threatens sanctions

The National Federation of Cooperatives of Public Passenger Transport (Fenacotip) announced it will suspend inter‑provincial bus service from 00:00 on 3 July 2026 unless the government approves a technical review of tariffs. Operators in Loja province backed the national claim, demanding a fare increase of at least 40 % after the removal of a diesel subsidy, and set a six‑day deadline for a resolution while emphasizing dialogue.

The National Transit Agency (ANT) responded by reminding operators that an unjustified suspension violates the Organic Law on Ground Transport and is classified as a very serious administrative offence. ANT said violations could be fined eight basic salaries and could trigger measures such as route revocation, operator intervention, or technical reviews.
