Ecuador travel advisory issued due to violent crime and kidnapping risks

The U.S. Department of State has issued a Level 2 ‘Exercise Increased Caution’ advisory for Ecuador due to concerns regarding violent crime, terrorism, and kidnapping.

Officials warned that widespread crime, including murders, assaults, and armed robberies, is frequently linked to drug trafficking and transnational criminal organizations. U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents have reportedly been victims of extortion and kidnapping.

The advisory highlights specific high-risk areas, including parts of Guayaquil and the coastal provinces of Manabí and Santa Elena. While popular destinations like Quito, Cuenca, and the Galápagos Islands are not currently under ‘Do Not Travel’ or ‘Reconsider Travel’ designations, travelers are urged to remain vigilant.
