Monika Silva murder ruled violent as Ecuador investigation expands

A forensic autopsy of Polish anti‑corruption activist Monika Silva, whose body was found on 8 June in her Montañita home in Ecuador's Santa Elena province, concluded that she died from a violent assault, not suicide. The report documented a head injury, a groove on the neck and blood traces in a second room, findings described by human‑rights observer Fernando Bastias as incompatible with self‑inflicted death.

Ecuador’s interior minister John Reimberg had initially suggested suicide, but the new evidence has prompted both Ecuadorian and Polish prosecutors to intensify the homicide inquiry. Two Argentine forensic specialists have been invited to serve as independent observers, and coordination with Polish authorities is ongoing.

The community in Montañita held an emotional public tribute, unveiling a mural of Silva, lighting candles and offering flowers while demanding justice and transparency. The case continues to draw regional and international attention as activists call for a thorough, unbiased investigation.
