Ecuadorian Amazon expedition discovers new northern green anaconda species

Scientists have discovered a new species of anaconda, named the northern green anaconda (Eunectes akayima), during a National Geographic expedition in the Ecuadorian Amazon. The discovery occurred in the territory of the Waorani people while filming a series featuring Will Smith.

Although the new species is visually almost identical to the southern green anaconda (Eunectes murinus) found in Brazil, genetic analysis revealed a 5.5 percent difference between the two. Researchers suggest the species may have diverged nearly 10 million years ago. The findings, which include specimens measuring up to 6 meters in length, were published in the journal Diversity.

The expedition was led by Professor Bryan Fry from the University of Queensland, alongside anaconda specialist Jesus Rivas from the University of New Mexico.
