Ecuadorian businesses struggle with digital transformation

Ecuadorian businesses face significant hurdles in digital adoption. According to data from the Pyme Digital program, a joint initiative by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and ESPOL, 68% of companies are currently at the lowest levels of digital maturity, classified as 'Initial' or 'Novice'.

While 84% of Ecuadorians use the internet regularly, only 13% of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) engage in online sales. Furthermore, only 28% of these businesses have their own website, and 22% maintain a social media presence.

To address these gaps, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Technology is promoting digital transformation through initiatives like FeriaTech in Manabí. Part of the EmpoderaTech program, this effort aims to support entrepreneurs and artisans by integrating tools such as e-commerce, digital payments, and applied Artificial Intelligence. Since January 2026, nearly 943 MSMEs nationwide have participated in digital maturity diagnostics to strengthen their competitiveness.
