Ecuadorian exports see rice surge and record totals
Ecuadorian rice exports to Colombia have accelerated following the restoration of land passage at the northern border. According to the Corporación de Industriales Arroceros del Ecuador (Corpcom), shipments reached approximately 41,000 metric tons by August. A significant surge occurred in August alone, with 20,000 metric tons dispatched. The industry aims to exceed 50,000 tons by the end of the year, a move that has helped stabilize local market prices for producers.
On a broader scale, Ecuador's total exports reached a record USD 10,177 million in the second quarter of 2026. However, the data reveals a divergence between sectors. While oil exports grew by 27% due to rising international prices, non-oil exports saw a more modest 4.4% increase. Mining has emerged as a major driver with 44% growth, helping to offset significant declines in the cacao sector, which saw a 55% drop in value. Shrimp remains a leading export, growing by 18% in dollar terms.
