Ecuadorian film initiatives showcase local culture through new short films
Various audiovisual training initiatives in Ecuador have resulted in the production of new short films focused on local identity and heritage.
In Riobamba, 25 participants of the IV Kunturñawi Lab completed a filmmaking program, producing three documentary short films. These works, titled ‘Mama Valeriana Anaguarqui’, ‘El Último Hojalatero’, and ‘Visibilizar lo invisible’, cover themes such as Andean wisdom, traditional craftsmanship, and animal abandonment. The films are slated for the official selection of the XV Kunturñawi Ecuadorian Film Festival in 2026.
In Guayaquil, the ‘Mi Propia Peli’ project, part of the Cultura en Movimiento program, presented four short films inspired by local legends. These productions were filmed at various heritage sites, including the Municipal Museum, the Municipal Jail, and the Municipal Cemetery. The initiative aims to foster interest in cinema and preserve cultural history through student and citizen participation.
