Ecuadorian fishermen demand justice after alleged US military attacks

Survivors and families of missing Ecuadorian fishermen gathered outside the National Assembly in Quito to demand justice and answers regarding military attacks on fishing vessels during 2026. The protesters were denied entry to the legislative building by security forces following orders from the Assembly's presidency.

The demonstrations follow reports, including an investigation by The Washington Post, alleging the involvement of the CIA in bombings against Ecuadorian vessels. Specifically, the attacks targeted the boats Don Maca, Negra Francisca Duarte II, and Fiorella. While crews from the first two vessels were eventually returned to Ecuador via El Salvador, eight crew members from the Fiorella remain missing.

Survivors reported being attacked by drones and subsequently being handcuffed and hooded after boarding a vessel that approached them. Victims have reported permanent physical injuries, including partial blindness, deafness, and mobility issues. Legislators have criticized the government for failing to initiate a formal oversight process or issue diplomatic protests regarding the alleged violation of national sovereignty.
