U.S. forces sink vessel in Eastern Pacific linked to Los Choneros

U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) announced the interception and sinking of a vessel in the Eastern Pacific on September 7, 2026. The vessel, described as a floating refueling station, was allegedly used to support drug trafficking operations by the Ecuadorian narco-terrorist organization Los Choneros.

The operation was carried out by the Joint Task Force – Western Hemisphere (JTF-WHEM). Following the inspection and disembarkation of the crew, U.S. forces sank the vessel. The individuals removed from the ship are scheduled to be transferred to Ecuadorian authorities.

This incident marks the fifth vessel intercepted and destroyed by U.S. forces in the Eastern Pacific in less than two weeks. Previous vessels targeted include the María Candelaria, Conquista 2, OM2, and Los Tres Hermanos. While SOUTHCOM maintains these are precise operations to dismantle criminal logistics, some Ecuadorian fishermen and human rights organizations have raised concerns. Reports from Human Rights Watch and local fishermen claim that such operations have impacted legitimate fishing activities, with some alleging attacks on vessels and crew members.
