Ecuadorian football authorities discuss new tournament and revenue growth
The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) and LigaPro are in the initial stages of discussing the creation of a new football tournament, potentially named ‘Copa de la Liga’. The proposal aims to expand the competitive calendar for the 2026 season and increase revenue through television rights and sponsorships by gathering popular clubs.
The proposed tournament could include teams from Serie A, Serie B, and the Second Category, such as Liga de Quito, Barcelona, Emelec, and Independiente del Valle, as well as historic clubs like El Nacional and Deportivo Quito. Officials are currently evaluating the format and its viability alongside existing competitions like the Copa Ecuador and international tournaments.
In a related development regarding the economic management of the sport, LigaPro president Miguel Ángel Loor released figures comparing the organization's financial performance to the FEF. Loor stated that LigaPro has generated $236 million since its inception in 2018, which is $80 million more than the $159 million recorded by the FEF over a 30-year period of managing the national championship.
