Ecuadorian judge clears 32 crew members after US vessel destruction

An Ecuadorian judge has declared 32 crew members innocent of charges related to two fishing vessels that were intercepted and destroyed by United States forces in Pacific waters. The crew members had been accused of collaborating with drug trafficking organizations, but the prosecution failed to present evidence supporting those links.

This incident follows a period of intense operational pressure by the US Southern Command, which intercepted eight Ecuadorian vessels and detained over 140 crew members between late August and mid-September. The case has raised significant questions regarding national sovereignty and the ability of Latin American governments to combat highly adaptable, transnational organized crime networks that operate across borders more efficiently than state institutions.
