Ecuadorian judiciary faces criticism over stalled corruption cases
The Ecuadorian judicial system is facing criticism for selective justice and significant delays in high-profile corruption cases. Several major legal processes involving government officials and political figures remain stalled or are nearing the statute of limitations without reaching a verdict.
Key cases include the “Fondos Europeos” case involving former official Julia Angulo, which has been in the preparatory stage for over seven years. The “Pruebas Covid-19” case, involving Abdalá Bucaram regarding irregularities in medical supply sales, has been ongoing for nearly six years, with the statute of limitations set for July 2027.
Other stalled proceedings include the “Danubio” or “Senae” case involving alleged illicit association in customs, which has lasted four years, and the “Vocales” case involving former members of the Judiciary Council, which has been in the trial phase for over three years without a sentence.
