Ecuadorian military intervenes at Cotacachi airstrip project

The Ecuadorian Armed Forces conducted an operation in the Iltaquí commune of Cotacachi, using explosives and heavy machinery to intervene at an airstrip located on the San Mateo estate. The military action, which occurred on November 5, resulted in damage to the terrain and the creation of trenches. Authorities stated the site lacked necessary permits and are investigating whether it was being prepared for illicit activities.

The Municipality of Cotacachi has defended the site, asserting that the airstrip is part of a legitimate aerial tourism project promoted since early 2024. Local officials claim the project was intended for light aircraft, ultralight operations, and potential air ambulance services. Former Mayor Jomar Cevallos noted that a formal agreement with the estate was signed in February 2024 and that the site has previously hosted aeromodelling competitions.

While the military operation was initially framed by some media outlets as a strike against illegal activities, the municipality maintains that no aircraft have landed at the facility to date. The intervention follows reports that the Civil Aviation Directorate and the Ecuadorian Air Force received alerts regarding the existence of the infrastructure.
