Ecuadorian officials and candidates denounce municipal corruption

In Azuay, Governor Xavier Bermúdez has criticized the Cuenca City Council for failing to fulfill its oversight duties regarding alleged irregularities during the administration of former mayor Cristian Zamora. Bermúdez accused several council members of remaining silent or supporting the use of public funds for mass events instead of investigating potential corruption. He announced the preparation of a detailed report incorporating complaints already filed with the Comptroller General and the Prosecutor's Office, citing specific cases such as a $270,000 concert expense, irregular purchases at the Iluminar Foundation, and issues involving EMOV EP radars.

In Quito, Harold Burbano, the Acción Democrática Nacional (ADN) candidate for mayor, led a demonstration in front of the Municipal Palace. Using the metaphor of “disinfecting” the mayor's office, Burbano promised to eradicate alleged corruption and institutional malpractice. The former minister, who served in the government of Daniel Noboa, called for transparency and criticized the current administration under Mayor Pábel Muñoz.
